Essentials for a Sick Baby

Must haves for when your baby is sick! Some things I haven't thought of.

Our poor baby is sick! She got sick this past Tuesday with a fever + cold all of a sudden. Poor thing. It was pretty bad timing too because Gracie had a Burt’s Bees Baby photoshoot scheduled for Thursday + Friday in Naples. We had to cancel because she was just too sick. On top of the congestion and fever, Gracie’s also been throwing up :(. It’s the absolute worst to see your baby sick! I wanted to share some of the things that we’ve been using that have helped a little! Must haves for when your baby is sick! Some things I haven't thought of.

1// Burts Bees PJs – We had to get Gracie girl snuggled up in her Burts Bees jammies in honor of our missed photoshoot. We were so bummed about cancelling the Burts Bees photoshoot, but we didn’t want to push Gracie while she was so sick. Plus, a boogery, snotty, baby doesn’t do the “best” in photoshoots. Even though I still think Gracie is so adorable when she’s sick.

Sorry for the poor photo quality!

2//Ear thermometer– I love this thing. At first, we tried taking Gracie’s temperature with the under the armpit thermometer… Let me just tell you- the thing took what seemed like 5 minutes to read her temp. She was so squirmy + fussy the whole time and it was just a nightmare. We found this ear one, and it literally takes one second. Gracie doesn’t even realize it’s in her ear by the time it’s done. And it seems very accurate. This was a must have.

3//Saline mist– Gracie was so congested that she could not breathe out of her nose. I could just tell she was so uncomfortable. This is so helpful for clearing those tiny passage ways. Just quirt 3-4 quick sprays in each nostril, then use the snot sucker.

4//Snot Sucker– I know i’ve talked about this before. Yes, you suck the snot out of babies nose. It honestly is a life saver, though. Go on amazon and read the reviews for yourself.

5//Tubby Todd Bubble Bath– One of the things that can cheer Gracie up in an instant is a bath. Why not make it extra fun with this amazing smelling bubble bath. This is the best way to distract a sick baby from their… sickness.

6//Mickey Mouse Clubhouse– Another great distraction from sickness. Gracie was so extra cuddly while she was sick that we would just cuddle up and watch a few episodes. A little extra TV can never hurt anyone.

7//Boogie Wipes– I love these for cleaning Gracie’s yucky nose up! Much better than regular wipes because they have saline in them. They are more gentle on baby’s skin!

BONUS//

BUBBLES- Who doesn’t love bubbles? Seriously- an instant cheer-up!

Teething Remedies

10 great teething remedies for baby. Some great advice I haven't read before. Gracefulmommy.com

It’s official! Gracie’s bottom two teeth have broken through! They are still not all the way up, but getting close for sure. PS- this is the best picture I have of her teeth, and you can’t even really see them. It is near impossible to get a good photo LOL!

The typical signs of teething are:

+drooling

+fussiness

+biting everything in sight

+doesn’t sleep good

+swollen gums

+grabs ears

Gracie let me know she was teething by biting everything and not sleeping good. She does not drool that much and I did not notice her gums getting swollen. She likes to bite on my fingers, and a few weeks ago I felt something sharp! It kind of happened out of no where. But then I thought back to the previous few nights and thought…. “oh…that’s probably why she was up every hour.”

I actually researched what the “teething period” actually is. I was wondering if teething was just when the tooth is cutting through or the time before. It’s actually considered “teething” 4 days before the tooth breaks through, and the 2-3 days after. So teething is pretty much for a week. It’s good to know that teething is not like a month long. Unless of course they get teeth back to back, I guess. Anyways, that week can feel like a month long if your baby is hurting!

I reached out to some of my followers to see what worked for them and their babies, and got some great responses! Here is my list of best teething remedies:

1//Frozen washcloths

This is an easy one. Just wet a washcloth and stick it in the freezer. I also tried this with breastmilk and Gracie seemed to love it! I think I’m going to have a couple in the freezer so they are always ready.

Frozen washcloths did wonders- Brittani F.

2//Hyland’s teething tablets

10 great teething remedies for baby. Some great advice I haven't read before. Gracefulmommy.com

These tablets are dissolvable and are supposed to provide fast relief of pain from teething. They are considered all natural + homeopathic. One day Gracie was pretty fussy and I gave her one of these before her nap and she slept great! Who knows if it was a coincidence, but lots of moms agree these work!

I used Hyland’s teething tablets & gel- Veronica M.

3//Amber bead necklace

10 great teething remedies for baby. Some great advice I haven't read before. Gracefulmommy.com

I first heard about these from a friend who was convinced this worked wonders on her son. The baltic amber beads contain succinic acid. When baby wears it, their body heat causes the amber to release the succinic acid which then is absorbed into the skin. This acid works as a natural pain relief and is also said to reduce inflammation. It’s actually very interesting to me. I put it on Gracie and haven’t noticed a HUGE difference yet. But she’s definitely been happy with it on!

Because it is a necklace, it can potentially be a choking hazard. When Gracie is sleeping, I move it to her foot. Also, I wouldn’t leave Gracie unattended with it on. It’s just not worth the risk!

We have an amber necklace which has reduced drooling a ton but we still don’t have any teeth over here! – Abby C.

Jeremiah started drooling buckets and was irritable and couldn’t sleep for 3 days. We decided to try the necklace and he was a new baby within 12 hours! We haven’t taken it off him since and he’s been great!! – Dani E.

4//Munchkin mesh feeders

I love these! Putting frozen food in these little mesh feeders seems to relieve teething pain for little Gracie girl! So far I have tried frozen banana, frozen carrots, and frozen breastmilk. To make the breastmilk popsicle, I pumped a little bit of milk, poured it in one of our frozen food containers, and then put it in the mesh feeder. Gracie was so content for about 30 minutes sucking on this! I’m sure it felt great on her gums. Be warned though, these mesh feeders can get super messy.

5//Camilia teething drops

This homeopathic medicine comes in single-use doses and you simply squeeze it into baby’s mouth. One of the active ingredients is actually the same as the Hyland’s teething tablets, so it may work similarly. These drops are supposed to temporarily relieve symptoms of teething, including painful gums and irritability. I have not tried these yet with Gracie, but after reading reviews online, I may soon!

We like the Camilia remedy. -Erica A.

6//Teething rings + toys

Keep a tupperware in the fridge full of tethers so you always have a cold one ready: 10 great teething remedies for baby. Some great advice I haven't read before. Gracefulmommy.com

We have a ton of these little teething rings and toys that we got for Gracie’s baby shower. She honestly didn’t chew on them much until she was truly teething. Now she loves them. I keep a tupperware in the fridge with all of the rings and toys. That way, we always have one cold. Gracie seems to like the Nuby keys toy a lot. I’ve heard that you should always put these toys in the fridge, instead of the freezer.

Yes, we have the famous sophie the giraffe teether. And yes, it is awesome. It’s not Gracie’s all time favorite toy, but she does like to chew on it. If you ask me, it’s a little creepy looking.

This minnie mouse toy from Disney World is actually Gracie’s current favorite teething toy.

7//Chewbeads

Ugh. I so wish I thought of this invention. These necklaces are genius! Unlike the amber beads that BABY wears, these are necklaces for mom to wear. They are actually super cute, too. I wear mine while I’m holding Gracie. She loves chewing on these. We also have the chewbeads bracelet that Gracie can chomp on for a good while. She loves it. I think it’s something about the  rubber it is made out of.

I have the chew bead bracelet & Gracie loves to chew on them when she visits. – Gramma

I like the chewbead necklaces that are for moms to wear. They probably don’t really help get the teeth through but my little guy loves chewing on them and they can be helpful while nursing because they give him something to play with without being overly distracted. – Nicole H.

8//Nursing

Sometimes, the only thing that works for Gracie is nursing. Breastfeeding truly does comfort her in a matter of seconds. It’s literally my go-to remedy for everything, including teething. If you aren’t breastfeeding, just try extra snuggles + cuddles.

9//Bagel

10 great teething remedies for baby. Some great advice I haven't read before. Gracefulmommy.com

Okay this one is pretty genius. Sometimes, teething toys just don’t do it for Gracie. She gets frustrated at them and ends up more fussy than before. Someone told me to just let her chew on a bagel. It’s easy to hold and allows her to chomp down without getting frustrated. A good tip I read is to microwave half a bagel for 30 seconds and then let it cool down. Doing this makes it stale so it will be rock hard. Just don’t leave baby unattended with it, because as baby chews on it, it does get soggy and can bagel pieces can start breaking off. I just kept rotating it for Gracie, and she LOVED it.

10//Infant tylenol

I haven’t given Gracie any traditional medicine yet, but there definitely is a time and place for it! I can imagine when Gracie gets her molars that she may be in a lot of pain, and may need something like tylenol to get through it.

I loved hearing from different people what worked best for their babies. Sometimes, though, what works for one baby, does nothing for another. Each baby is unique and they prefer different remedies. Your baby may not respond well to any of these. In that case, you just have to snuggle hard and get through those tough days! Teething doesn’t last forever!

Disney World with a Baby

Disney World with a Baby- Tips and Tricks at Gracefulmommy.com

People have mixed reactions about bringing a baby to Disney World. The thing I heard the most was that “she won’t remember it”. But- isn’t that what pictures are for? hehe! Also, it was surprisingly easy with our 5 month old, Gracie. I actually think the toddler age may be more difficult. We had tons of fun with our baby there! I can’t wait to bring her again!

Here are a few of my tips + tricks for bringing a baby to Disney. This is what helped us!

Buy outfits ahead of time. We spent a couple of weeks finding cute Disney outfits for Gracie. We found some great ones at TJ Maxx, Bealls, Burlington Coat Factory, and even ordered a few from the Disney Store when they had a sale. This saves you tons of money because the cute outfits in the park are pretty pricey!

Find the Baby Care Centers. Oh my- these will be your best friend. Every park has a baby care center and they are amazing. Most of them have a few different rooms- a nursing room, changing room, feeding room, and even a play room for older babies. I nursed Gracie in here many times!  The baby care center in Magic Kingdom actually had comfy recliners to nurse in- the other centers had rocking chairs! It was nice to get in the air conditioned, dark room for a while.

Good nursing spots. For times when I didn’t feel like walking to the baby center, I found other great nursing spots. It was sort of hot when we went, so I didn’t want to feed Gracie on one of the benches outside (Gracie gets really sweaty). Instead I fed her on the bus, on a ride, on the train, in a gift shop, or in a fitting room.

Bring sunscreen. We went to Disney in December- and it was still HOT. So always pack sunscreen even if you think you won’t need it!

Bring your own stroller. We brought our Britax to Disney. I recommend you bring your own stroller because your baby is probably used to yours. Also, the ones to rent do not look that comfy. Gracie took all of her naps in her stroller. I don’t know if she would have slept in the rental one.

Pack a diaper backpack. Instead of a diaper bag, bring a backpack. It was so much easier to have a backpack because when we waited in line, we could wear it on our backs instead of carrying it on our shoulder. It’s just more comfy + easy.

Pack essentials. In our diaper backpack, we had a few things that really came in handy. First, a ziplock bag. One day, Gracie pooped all over her clothes. It was easy to just throw it in the ziplock bag and put her change of clothes on. Which reminds me. Pack a change of clothes for the park. Also- bring pacifier wipes. Disney is full of germs, so we wiped down Gracie’s pacifier and stroller many times! Oh, and don’t forget hand sanitizer!!

Take baby on rides. Babies are allowed on rides that have no height requirement. It’s surprisingly more rides than I thought. Our favorite rides with Gracie were Little Mermaid, Haunted Mansion, Finding Nemo, and It’s a Small World.

Do other things, too! Don’t assume that rides are the only fun parts of Disney World! There are so many other things to enjoy in the parks. We took Gracie to meet a lot of Characters. There are also plenty of shows, too! Also, Disney Springs is a fun place to walk around and shop.

Request a crib. Don’t worry about bringing your own pack + play if you are staying at a Disney resort. They will deliver a fold up crib to your room! They even bring Disney sheets.

Know your transportation. There are plenty of ways to get to the Disney parks! You can always drive, but when you stay at a Disney hotel, you can take the bus, ferry, and sometimes the monorail. It helps to know the stroller rules for each transportation method. If you are taking a Disney bus, the stroller MUST be folded up. However, you can keep baby in the stroller on the ferries and the monorail! This is helpful when baby is sleeping!

Purchase Disney PhotoPass. This is so worth it! When you buy the PhotoPass package, you get all photos taken by the Disney photographers. There are so many in the parks. It made it way easier to get group shots and the classic shots in front of the castle. You also get all photos taken on rides and at character meet and greets. I loved having this for Gracie’s first time at Disney. The photos are priceless. Okay not priceless, but only $149 if you buy it 3 days in advanced. If you wait until your trip starts, it is $169. If you don’t have the PhotoPass, one photo printed in a 4×6 will cost $14.95! Whoa.

Plan out your days with the My Disney Experience app. This app really comes in handy when you have a baby! You can plan out all of your FastPasses for each day. We never rode a ride if we didn’t have FastPass. It’s just too hard to wait in line with a baby! But, you can also see the wait times for each ride. Also, on the app you can make dining reservations! You can also find the Baby Care centers on the maps. And, you can view and download all of your PhotoPass photos. This made the trip easy because we knew what we were doing each day.

Be flexible + go with the flow. While it was really helpful to plan out our days with the Disney App, it also helps to just be flexible. Gracie ended up sleeping in each day until like 10 or 11, so we had to move some of our reservations and FastPasses around. Sometimes you have to just go with the flow. We also ended up skipping a few things because Gracie was sleeping. That’s okay too! Most important part is keeping baby happy + having fun!
